The misconceptions about cancer

It is accepted by most of the health authorities that the risk of cancer is increasing day by day due to different reasons such as unhealthy diet, smoking and air pollution. By the help of the developments in the information technologies and internet, it is very easy to be informed about the cancer nowadays. You can learn lots of things about the indications and symptoms of cancer, treatment method, surgeries, etc. Even, it is possible today to watch a surgery of cancerous patients on YouTube.  However, beside the profits of easiness to have much information about the cancer via internet, the redundant and unnecessary information on the internet and of course remotely stuffed information in the society, cause many misconceptions about cancer. The health specialists are warning about the misinformation about the cancer.

Here are some of the misconceptions about cancer. It is wrong to say that many cancer types do not show early warning signs and symptoms. Most of the cancer types have indications by which the cancer may be diagnosed in an early stage. At least half of all the cancer cases can be prevented or caught early by screening. “Biopsy of tumor tissue causes cancer to spread” is another incorrect information. There is no scientific evidence that biopsy result of tumors in the spread of cancerous cells.

Saying most cancers are genetic and if you do not have cancer stories in your family you are not at risk is also wrong. Only 5-10 percent of the cancer cases have genetic relationship. Most are sporadic and have no family relationship. ‘Some types of cancer are contagious’ statement is also wrong. No variety of cancer is contagious. However, it is known that some infectious viruses can cause cancer.

Statement of cancer patients should not eat sugar is a wrong information. There is no scientific evidence that sugar can cause cancer cells to develop or spread rapidly. Reducing sugar does not slow down cancer growth while increasing sugar does not accelerate the growth of cancerous cells.
