Ford SYNC 3 Update brings Android Auto and Apple Carplay support for 2016 model vehicles


Ford has begun bringing the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support of 2017 models with the SYNC 3 system to the 2016 model vehicles with the same system.

Ford has announced that 2016 car owners equipped with the SYNC 3 system will be able to update to the new version of the system. With this update, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity will be available in the vehicles. Version 2.2 update can be acquired via a USB memory stick, just by the help of a vendor, or via a Wi-Fi connection.

SYNC 3 now offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support for all 2017 Ford vehicles, including Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Escape, Explorer, Expedition and F-Series. This is the first time Ford offers an update via Wi-Fi for the SYNC system. According to Ford’s statement, vehicle owners with Wi-Fi connectivity do not need to take any action on vehicles where the auto-update option is obvious.

The manufacturer announced that the infotainment system started to provide support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in January 2016. In order to use Android Auto a device with at least Android 5.0 (Lollipop) is installed is required while there need iOS 7.1 or above installed device, IPhone 5 or newer is required to use Apple CarPlay.
