What are the habits destroying your kidneys?

Our daily habits can ruin health of our kidneys. The kidneys, responsible for filtering the blood and expelling the waste products of metabolism, are among the most important organs of our body. They regulate the acid base balance of the body; regulate the fluid electrolyte balance of the body and produce blood pressure regimens, necessary hormones and enzymes. The damage of such an organ which is so important also affects our health negatively. Some mistakes we make in our daily lives can cause damages to the kidneys. Here are our unwittingly made daily behaviors which threat our kidneys.

Excess consumption of protein threatens our kidneys. Excess protein consumption produces excess ammonia. As a result, the kidney works hard to neutralize it, so it gradually falls from strength.

Salt is the biggest contributor to kidney failure.  Consuming too much salt causes too much pressure on the kidneys to regulate body electrolytes and blood pressure.

The dehydration, loss of excessive amount of water, ignores thirst and stops the kidney function to keep the body dry. The kidneys need water to work properly. We need to drink about 10 glasses of water every day. You should look at the color of your urine in order to understand whether or not you consume enough water.

Smoking affects adversely all body organs including the kidneys in connection with the constriction and hardening of the blood vessels.

Too much alcohol consumption increases the level of uric acid in the blood. It causes the tubing of the kidneys to clog and cause stone formation.

Misuse of medicines, especially painkillers, can cause many side effects on the body, mostly on the kidneys. On the other hand, certain medicines, especially those prescribed for blood pressure and diabetes should be taken at the right dose and in the correct way. Failure to do so can lead to kidney failure.

A study at the University of Maryland showed that deficiency of B6 vitamins increased kidney stone risk. These vitamin sources include sunflower seeds, pistachio nuts, chickpeas, fish and starchy vegetables.
